diy mobile magazine

Hi guys!  I'm partnering with a super awesome company who is working on making a mobile magazine platform called Luca where you can create your own little magazines!  These little magazines are an awesome way to share blog content on mobile devices like iPads and smartphones where you can flip through just by swiping, like a magazine!  For my first "Luca" magazine  I thought it'd be fun to put together a little magazine of some of my favorite easy DIY projects, which you can find here.  It's mainly formatted for mobile (but it also works on a normal computer too), so grab your phone or tablet and flip through!  Also, since we're still working out the kinks, let me know if there's anything that you think would make the magazine make more sense in how you navigate, etc.  I'm planning on making a few more Luca (maybe a recipe booklet, hair and makeup tutorial booklet, etc), so if you have anything from the blog that you'd like to see compiled into a little mobile magazine, let me know!  I'm excited for Luca get all the final touches so it can officially launch, I think it'll be a great way to create packets of content for readers.  I'm currently putting together an Anchorage city travel guide and I think a Luca mobile magazine would be the perfect platform for something like a city travel guide!

And speaking of mobile devices, I might be a little less active on the blog this week because I'm up in Anchorage running around, so if you want to see what I'm up to, follow along on Instagram!  I'm sharing lots of Alaskan photos and a ton of Iditarod images too!

the perfect tree

I've featured some of Parker's work here before, but these photos were just too good not to share.  Besides, tis the season for Christmas tree spam, right?  These photos make me wish that I was a little boy all bundled up for a christmas tree hunting trip with my Dad.  I'm always amazed at how Parker evokes such tangible feelings in his photographs.  Parker mentioned in his blog post that, since these photos were shot for the Kinfolk Magazine winter issue, they had to be shot back in July.  It's pretty incredible that he evoked that cozy, rubbing your hands together feeling, even though it was well above 70 degrees when these images were created.  Head over to his blog to see the rest of the images, or pick up a copy of Kinfolk!

the bartlett

the bartlett spokane

This past week I learned about an awesome new music venue in Spokane that will open next spring.  It's being started by an old acquaintance, Karli Ingersoll, and her husband Caleb.  Karli is an incredible musician and graphic designer and we hung out a couple times during my time in Spokane.  I'm super excited to see this endeavor come together and would absolutely love to take a little road trip over to Spokane to see a show at The Bartlett.

I still have a thing for Spokane.  When I was going to school there, I often would get annoyed with students who were from other, "cooler" cities, like Seattle.  They would constantly complain about how there wasn't anything to do in Spokane, though they would never take the effort to actually get off campus and see what was actually going on in Spokane's art and music scene.  By the time I got to my senior and fourth year of living in Spokane, I decided I wanted to do something to expose those people on campus to what was going on in the city.  If they weren't willing to go see what awesome things were going on, what amazing art shows were happening, what incredible local musicians were playing at cool venues... well then I would bring it to them in the form of a magazine.  I put out my first issue of Corsair, a full color magazine fully funded, designed, and put together by me.  I recruited a few friends to help write articles and shoot some additional photos, but for the most part it was my pet project.  I met so many amazing artists and musicians, and visited some incredible bars, restaurants, and venues and my love for the city grew 10 times!

Karli was one of the artists featured in my first issue.  At the time she was working as a graphic artist for a local firm and playing music in venues around Spokane and the Northwest.  She is one of the most talented and passionate women I know, and I'm a big fan of supporting the endeavors of other creative, passionate, and entrepreneurial ladies out there.

If you're a graphic design nerd like me, you'll love seeing this little timelapse of the process Karli went through to get to the final design for The Bartlett's logo!

I know there are probably not a ton of you who live in Spokane or even the Northwest, but if you want to help Karli and Caleb start this awesome new contribution to the music and culture scene in Spokane, you can contribute to making The Bartlett become a reality by clicking and donating here.

back in time

As I'm sure you're all well aware of by now, I'm a big fan of vintage loveliness, and I've been really loving browsing through various photo archives, including Vintage Fashion Magazines. It's really interesting to me to see how many of these old editorials could almost be placed in a contemporary magazine and no one would bat an eye. Even the clothes are something that a lot of people would like today. I'm dying over the little white dress in the photograph below, too cute!!

I loved reading all your comments on my last post! I have felt like, in the past year, someting new is being birthed in fashion journalism. I especially feel that since attending the IFB conference and hearing how so many of us in the blogging world feel about fashion and fashion journalism in general.

I should clarify that I don't hate all fashion magazines as a blanket statement. I don't hate Vogue as a whole, though I disagree with much of its contents and what it represents. And I don't literally hate Anna Wintour. I actually quite admire her strength and tenacity. But. I feel like traditional fashion journalism is dying. We're not in the 50's any more. Women don't need to be force fed trends, we're so much more independent now and feel comfortable and able formulating our own opinions, rather than being told what to think. And when I say "traditional" I don't mean "print". I for one ADORE print (what can I say, I was a printmaking major!). Web based is great too. The immediacy, the social aspect, the amazing resources available at fingertip. There is nothing like holding a magazine in your hands though. Or seeing the photograph in person, not just in digital format on a screen. Tactility is really important to me. When I used to run my old fashion magazine, there was nothing more joyful than holding the first proof of my issue in my hands, physically. It was amazing.

I think publications like NYLON are "getting it" a lot more than others. I like that I can see affordable outfits and more interesting and "out there" trends. I'd love to do a magazine that was focused on street style, thrifting, vintage, and the occasional designer piece. This is basically what CORSAIR was and I loved every minute of working on that magazine.
I don't mean to hate on designers. I understand the incredible work they go through to create such stunning clothing, and it's expensive for a reason, not just arbitrarily. I feel like designer duds are much more representative though. Those of us who could never dream of owning a designer piece can still take part in the dialogue the designer is sharing with us by being inspired by the outfits and clothing he or she makes.
I think I'm going to stick out the semester and reevaluate stuff in June. I'm taking three classes and I'm only supposed to be taking two, so I did actually overload myself... I'm an overachiever, which can be good or disastrous. Taking classes in Alaska when my school is in San Francisco makes things difficult, and while I'd love to be able to go to class physically, I don't regret not moving to SF. It would have been the wrong timing and I'm sure I would feel even more overwhelmed than I am now.

Okay, so less about my life and thoughts, and more about the outfit! I grabbed this photo from tumblr the other day and decided I must recreate this outfit and thus, today's outfit of mine was born. I'll let you in on a secret: There's more about this photo I'm going to emulate, but I'm not telling just yet....

Also, my photos are from the horse show grounds near my work! I can't even estimate how many hours I've spent in these stalls. Though, I've never been there during winter! There was so much snow! I forgot that it snowed while I was in Hawaii and I tried to go my usual route and found myself up to my hips in snow. Yeah. I was wearing tights. It was cold. Luckily someone had plowed the road to the barns (which I did not know at first) so I made my way over to the road and didn't have to wade through the snow anymore.
